Somerville demonstrates smart growth in action

New Jersey Future recently recognized officials of the borough of Somerville and several other partners from the private and government sectors for their ongoing work in updating the downtown area.

A ceremony was held on the Rutgers/Newark campus to honor the seven municipalities, of which Somerville was one, for their innovative ways to revitalize communities.

Executive Director of New Jersey Future, Peter Kasabach, said that Somerville has been identified as having a long-term comprehensive plan, which has been put into practice to make a community a thriving center of activity.

Development plans to revitalize the downtown to be rolled out in three phases were created by the borough 10 years ago. The plan focused on three areas in and around the heart of the downtown area. The plan for each area was tailored to reflect the nuances of the area while still contributing to the overall vision of the plan.

Staff from Somerset County, residents, regional and local stakeholders, and businesses had input into the plan. Elements of improvement included access to transit and walkability, resulting in a downtown that has improved the local economy and created a vibrant, welcoming, and safe environment for residents and visitors.

Poster printing companies can be hired to create posters that can be displayed throughout the borough so that the community can be aware of such recognitions and what it means to its livelihood and overall wellbeing.
