County library offers free lunch and activity program

Free lunches are being provided to children by an association of the St. Louis County Library and Operation Food Search.

Running now through August 3, a nutritious lunch with various activities will be provided at nine public libraries in the St. Louis area Monday through Friday from noon until 1:00 pm. Children 18 years of age and younger are eligible for these meals free of charge.

Several branches in St. Louis will be offering this program, as well as the branch in St. Ann located at 10267 St. Charles Rock Road.

Operation Backpack will also be offered on Thursdays. This provides families who attend the lunch with a bag of groceries that remain stable on the shelf to take home for the weekend. On Fridays, children are treated to pizza for lunch.

The Summer Food Program of the United States Department of Agriculture funds the meals and Operation Food Search coordinates the program. Complimentary activities are provided by the library and include story times, crafts, and board games both during lunch and afterwards. The program is run with the assistance of teenage volunteers.

Poster printing companies can be hired to create displays in key locations so that people can become aware of such programs and their availability to those in need of a healthy lunch and weekend food supplies.
