Phillips Academy opens new athletic facility

The new athletic facility at Phillips Academy in North Andover was recently unveiled and those from nearby Andover will want to see its many amenities and offerings.

The Snyder Center is 98,000 square feet in area and has 12 squash courts, a 200-meter indoor track, and an arena that can accommodate 2,500 people at any one time.

The architecture and design firm of Perkins and Will took one year to design the facility, with construction taking about two years.

The track can serve several functions as it can also be used for intramural basketball games and tennis. The second floor has multipurpose rooms that can be used in various capacities. Corridors have windows that go from floor to ceiling overlooking the surrounding athletic fields, at the end of which there are stationary bikes. The building also has two kitchens for events with seating several areas for students to gather for socializing.

One end of the building goes into a grassy hill. This makes it look like a one-story building from the football field to the south of the building while it looks larger from the tennis courts to the north. The front entryway has garden that collects rainwater and creates small waterfalls.

Brochure printing could be used to publicize more information about such facilities, including amenities and hours of operation.
