Ice cream outlet opening second location in San Diego

Salt & Straw, a gourmet ice cream shop with roots in Portland, has one location in San Diego, in Little Italy. The company recently announced plans to open a second store, this time in Carmel Valley, bringing the goodies to the city’s northern section.

What makes Salt & Straw different is its policy of creating ice cream treats based on the location of the store, and making them by hand, in small batches. Unique flavors are offered, with new ones every month.

In order to make their ice cream distinct to the San Diego market, Salt & Straw has sourced its ingredients locally wherever possible, working with groups like James Coffee, located in San Diego, as well as two Los Angeles suppliers, Compartes and La Guelaguetza Restaurant.

The shop’s ‘James Coffee and Compartes Love Nuts’ ice cream is made by mixing cold coffee made from beans roasted at James Coffee with caramel-covered, chocolate-dipped pecans from Compartes. Another flavor of ice cream, Peanut Butter Stout with Chocolate Chicharron, takes Peanut Butter Milk Stout from the Belching Beaver Brewery in northern San Diego County, and pairs it with caramelized, dark chocolate pork chicharron.

The new location should open sometime in 2019. Businesses like this might consider distributing promotional products to their first customers, to thank them and build the brand.
