Mesa experiences the Mediterranean

May 16, 2018 by

For one weekend in June, all of us in the Mesa area can enjoy the cultures and sounds of the Mediterranean region. Experience the Mediterranean will be a two-day event featuring live performances of music and instruments specifically from the Mediterranean area.

An Instrument Spotlight that will have programs demonstrating instruments from Dubrovnik in Croatia to Southern Spain. Guests will get the opportunity to get their hands on some of that area’s ubiquitous musical instruments and view displays in galleries from the Middle East and Europe.

There will be family-friendly music and drumming sessions throughout the two days. Jack Saba will be giving violin, guitar and oud Mid-Eastern music performances with local musician Ninos Toma.

After a Mediterranean-inspired lunch, guests can join a Greek Folk Dance workshop, listen to Italian accordion and Mediterranean guitar performances and attend a talk called ‘A Time-Traveling Musical Tour of the Mediterranean’ given by curator David Wegehaupt. Evolving Through Art members will be painting the Mediterranean Sea’s rich, warm colors in designs on eager accommodating faces.

Attendees can also get their pictures taken in costumes and props at the photo booth. Many photos that will be available instantly may be taken to Mesa print shops for future poster printing.

Experience the Mediterranean will be Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10 from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, at the Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 E. Mayo Blvd, Phoenix.
