Odd memorabilia item obtained by Anchorage store

The last Blockbuster in Anchorage recently acquired an unusual memento of the movies: the leather jockstrap Russell Crowe wore in the 2005 film ‘Cinderella Man’.

Kevin Daymude, the store’s general manager, received the jockstrap and other items from various movies from John Oliver, the host of the HBO talk show ‘Last Week Tonight’.

On a recent broadcast, Oliver hosted a lengthy segment about the last three Blockbuster stores in Alaska, and then showed viewers the memorabilia he intended to give to the store, suggesting Daymude could us the items to bring customers to the shop.

Although the jockstrap is probably the most intriguing item, and definitely the one everyone wants to see, it is not the only gift Oliver sent. Daymude also received additional items from ‘Cinderella Man’ and other Crowe films, including the boxing shorts and robe worn by the 54-year-old actor in ‘Cinderella Man’, a hood from ‘Robin Hood’, and chairs Crowe and Denzel Washington had on set during the filming of 2007’s ‘American Gangster’.

Daymude did not see the Last Week Tonight episode when it aired, but finally got hold of the program to claim the items. He expected to receive photos, and was skeptical that he would be given the actual memorabilia, and was delighted when the items arrived.

In order to draw attention to a unique attraction like this, stores can work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for area residents.
