Bellingham celebrates holiday with relay and festival

May 8, 2018 by

Memorial Day weekend is coming up, and everyone is getting ready for the local Ski to Sea Relay and Fairhaven Festival.

Eight racers will compete in seven different sports in the Ski to Sea Relay. These will be sea kayak, Cyclocross bike, two-paddler canoe, road bike, running, downhill ski/snowboarding, and cross country ski. Divisions will be corporate, veterans, high school, WHATCOM County, car-free teams, and masters. Racing bibs will be color-coded to differentiate between competitive and recreational runs.

This year racers can participate in up to three legs for multiple teams, or for one team. Participants will be guaranteed T-shirts displaying the Ski to Sea Relay graphic design when they register.

Since its inception in 2014, the relay has donated more than $60,000 to local food banks, Girl and Boy Scout troops, Boys and Girls Clubs and other local worthy causes.

Following the relay, Fairhaven Festival 2018 will get into full swing. Live entertainment will take place on two stages, non-profits will have information booths, children will enjoy activities geared for them and local arts and crafters will be selling their original works. Plenty of ethnic and traditional food will be available.

Ski to Sea Relay is scheduled for May 27 with the first leg beginning at Mt. Baker Ski Area at 7:30 am, and will end at Marine Park in Historic Fairhaven. The free festival will be from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm.
