McHenry County to celebrate Year of the Bird

April 26, 2018 by

This year marks the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a federal law that helps to protect migratory birds that make their way from the United States to the United Kingdom.

With 2018 being referred to as the “Year of the Bird”, wildlife organizations and areas around the McHenry, Illinois area will be celebrating this special occasion by hosting special events to honor the treaty.

Some of the events that will be taking place this weekend include a bird banding event with USFWS biologists at the Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, a USFWS bird banding demonstration at the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge location at Ducks Unlimited, and an activity day at the Volo Bog State Natural Area. These events will be hosted by organizations such as the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the McHenry County Conservation District.

In addition to these events, promotional products will be given away to the first 75 children between the ages of six and 14 who are able to complete 14 activities at either the Volo Bog State Natural Area or Glacial Park. The product that will be given out will be a birding backpack dedicated to the memory of Zachary Brokaw.
