Sacramento Jazz group turned over to new members

The Midtown Vanguard Jazz Series is presenting Capital Jazz Project Passing the Torch toward the end of February.

The original members of the Capital Jazz Project are Joe Gilman on piano, Tom Peron on trumpet, Mike McMullen on sax, Henry Robinett on guitar, Rick Lotter on drums, Phil Tulgo on trombone, and Kerry Kashiwagi on bass. They will be presenting their last performance as a group, having been together since 1997 giving concerts, and producing educational experience for our music community. They now feel it is time for CJP to get some new blood.

The members composing the next generation of Sacramento jazz are no strangers to the local and international jazz scene as they have been involved with UC Davis and CSU-Stanislaus jazz education programs and played with renowned jazz artists such as Donald Brown, Jeff Clayton, and Christian McBride. The new members include Levi Saelua and Jacam Manricks on sax, Matt Robinson on bass, Tim Metz on drums, Joe Mazzaferro on trumpet, and Brenden Lowe on piano. Henry Robinett will be the only returning artist.

The first part of the evening will be The Music of the Blue Note, which is a recreation of the original ensemble’s first concert and the new CJP members will take over the second set.

Devoted fans will want to take photos of both groups for later poster printing.

The big night will be February 25 from 7:00 until 10:00 pm at the Auditorium at CLARA, 1425 24th Street.
