Intra-District enrollment period open in Downey

The Intra-District Open Enrollment option, which was once called ‘School of Choice’, is available now, for the 2018-2019 academic year. Parents of students who live outside the district are not eligible to take advantage of this program.

The Downey Unified School District has a somewhat unusual policy—it allows parents to send their children to a different school to the one in their attendance area, provided the parents live inside the district boundaries.

Applications for the open enrollment program are available at the school district office, or at any one of the 20 schools in the Downey Unified district. They can also be completed and submitted online by going to

Students, including those going to kindergarten, who are coming to a Downey Unified School District facility for the first time have to register at the school in their attendance area, even if they want to choose a different school later. They are welcome to take part in the program, but registering at their attendance school will guarantee that they are registered with the District in time for the start of school.

Applications are handled by lottery, not on a first-come, first-served basis. Lottery winners are placed on a wait list for openings for the next school year.

The intra-district enrollment period runs throughout the entire month of January, ending January 31.

Issues like this are important and complex, so officials could work with a flyer printing company on a detailed mailer for area residents.
