NASA and American Girl partnering on out-of-this-world doll

A collaboration between American Girl and NASA has resulted in the creation of the company’s 2018 Girl of the Year doll – aspiring astronaut Luciana Vega.

Luciana is the company’s latest addition, and she and her product line were launched on New Year’s Day. Available online and in brick-and-mortar stores, the company’s most recent catalog printing order will in all likelihood feature American Girl’s latest doll prominently.

American Girl went the extra mile to ensure authenticity by having editors and designers visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center’s Space Camp here in Huntsville, as well as the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Advice was also gleaned from several of NASA’s high-ranking female employees, including Megan Behnken, one of NASA’s astronauts.

American Girl dolls are known for their distinctive personalities, detailed back stories and ambitious goals. American Girl dolls have always urged girls to figuratively reach for the starts, but with Luciana, the company offers girls a role model who has literally set going into space as her goal. Presented as an 11-year old girl brimming with self-confidence, Luciana wants to be the first person to land on Mars.

Luciana Vega was unveiled on Good Morning America and received an enthusiastic welcome from uniformed Space Camp girls, each of whom was presented with their own 2018 Girl of the Year doll.
