Blood drive scheduled in Cottonwood Heights

January 4, 2018 by

Cottonwood Heights has scheduled a blood drive, and is encouraging all citizens to take part in this important effort. The drive will be handled by ARUP Blood Services.

ARUP, a non-profit organization, is a collection center that is the sole provider of blood to the University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics, South Jordan Health Center, Shriners Hospital for Children, Primary Children’s Hospital, and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. In total, 48 hospitals in Utah use blood, and the five supplied by ARUP use almost 25% of the amount collected.

ARUP Blood Services is part of ARUP Laboratories, which is associated with the Department of Pathology of the University of Utah. ARUP supplies blood to Utah’s children’s hospitals, a specialized need since it must be no more than five days old. An ongoing supply of blood is also needed for a number of procedures including surgery, trauma, and burns, as well as for those requiring cancer treatment, or requiring bone marrow transplants.

ARUP separates the blood it collects into its components, so it can help as many people as possible. In order to meet the demand among the institutions it services, ARUP needs to have 100 people per day donate whole blood.

The drive will take place from 1:00 until 6:00 pm next Thursday, January 11, at Cottonwood Heights City Hall, located on Bengal Boulevard.

Important efforts like this can benefit if officials work with a postcard printing company to create cards to mail throughout the area.
