Grinch “arrested” in Edison

December 6, 2017 by

Police in Edison, New Jersey, busted the Grinch as he tried to make off with Christmas. As punishment. The green-skinned grouch is now being hauled through town in a portable jail cell, so he can meet the kids who want to have photos taken with him, according to an article on

The “arrest and municipal court appearance” of the Grinch was filmed in a novelty video that got more than 15,000 hits in the space of two days. The film also turned the officers who “arrested” the Grinch, Keith Jackson and Chris Gadomski, into social media stars.

Judge Mary Casey imposed the sentence of community service on the Grinch, in the hope that he could recover his holiday spirit; if he did, she said, he would be considered rehabilitated and released.

The “arrest” of Dr. Seuss’s famous sourpuss was the kick-off for the city’s Toys for Tots campaign, the annual effort by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to gather toys for needy children. To that end, people who pay a visit to the miserable character are asked to bring a new, unopen toy with them.

The Grinch will be at various locations in Edison until tomorrow, December 7. The full schedule can be found on the department’s Facebook page.

To get maximum response to events like this, officials could work with a postcard printing company on cards to announce the campaign.
