Russian Nutcracker coming to Youngstown

November 24, 2017 by

The Moscow Ballet is on tour in North America, and will be coming to Powers Auditorium in Youngstown to present its version of the holiday classic, titled the ‘Great Russian Nutcracker’.

The Moscow Ballet comprises artists from several other ballet troupes, including the Odessa State Academic Ballet Theatre, the Kiev National Theater, and the internationally-known Mariinsky Ballet Theatre.

Principal dancers for this production include Olekseii Potiomkin, Veronika Hordina, Kostyantyn Vinovoy, and Iryna Borysova. In addition, local children who auditioned successfully were given small roles in the show.

The Moscow Ballet’s Nutcracker is the only production of the Christmas classic on tour this year. Among other things, the show displays seven backdrops illustrating Russian heritage, a 60-foot Christmas tree that ‘grows’, puppets that measure 10 feet tall, and 100 costumes that fit 40 dancers. The new costumes and scenery were handmade at a theatrical shop in Russia. The shop is 300 years old, and also makes costumes and props for the famed La Scala opera in Milan.

The ‘Great Russian Nutcracker’ is here for only one performance, and it takes place tomorrow, November 25, at 3:00 pm. Powers Auditorium is on Federal Street in downtown Youngstown; tickets are available online, at the box office, or by calling (330) 744-0264.

Events like this can be even more colorful and fun if managers use festive holiday banners to decorate the venue.
