Spartanburg college appoints new dean

Wofford College in Spartanburg recently appointed Demario Watts as assistant dean of students for diversity.

Holding a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees, and currently enrolled in a doctoral program, Watts feels that in his new leadership role it is important to show students at the college that he is a student as well. He plans to build relationships with students and others in the Wofford community, advocate for the students, and develop new initiatives in leadership education.

For the past two years, Watts has been assistant director of residence life and is also one of the deputy coordinators for Title IX at the college.

Roberta Bigger, Dean of Students, commented that the students respect Watts and his peers admire him. He is an ideal person to fill this position given his experience, creativity, and knowledge.

Watts has been engaging in conversations with students and listening to their needs. Some of his plans so far include increasing the diversity of the student population, developing a speakers’ series focusing on issues of diversity and inclusion, holding a leadership conference designed to increase the sustainability of campus organizations, and assisting multicultural groups with event and strategic planning.

Poster printing companies could be used by colleges such as Wofford to create posters with general information about the appointment of Watts, as well as other posters to announce events and activities that might be offered during the academic year.
