The Amateur Rib Cook-Off was recently held for the eighth consecutive year in Frankfort awarding four prizes including a crowd pleaser award.

There were 16 contestants for the event which was held in downtown Frankfurt at Breidert Green Park. The first-place winner was Mokena’s Blowin’ Smoke, the second place went to Frankfort’s Smoke Wind & Fire, and the third-place winner was Bad Axe BBQ from Palos Heights. South Side Pit Men from Oak Forest received the crowd pleaser award.

To create the ideal rub for the cook-off, all contestants used special spices and sauces. There were three judges for the event: Ed Zalinski, Brian Bury, and Mary O’Conner. Marty “Big Dog” Mercer provided live music for the festivities.

More than 600 people came to the cook-off. Manager of community relations for the village of Frankfort, Mary Canino, commented that the cook-off has once again proved to be a favorite among families and has exceeded expectations. She thanked the Frankfort Lions Club and the Frankfort Jaycees for their enthusiasm and support of the event to make it such a success.

Beverage purchases went to benefit the Frankfort Lions Club while food purchases went to benefit the Jaycees.

Flyers are often used to attract large numbers of people to events like these and to publicize fundraising efforts.
