James RL Little, III – better known to his friends and colleagues as Jim – grew up at a time and in a town “where a handshake meant something.” While working as a truck driver, Jim was looking to own his own business and it was important for him to find a business and a community that would simply let Jim be Jim. He wasn’t going to change his core values and, as Jim says, “I wasn’t a fan of big cities or the ‘corporate’ world.” He found what he was looking for in the form of his Minuteman Press franchise in Burlington, Wisconsin, which gave Jim the opportunity to run a business on his own terms while still following a tried and proven system.
BURLINGTON, Wis.— Make no mistake about it: Jim Little is his own boss. If you live in Burlington, you probably have seen Jim walking around town on a hot summer day, wearing his Minuteman Press polo shirt and khaki shorts, conducting business. He follows the Minuteman Press franchise program, but it is a program that lets business owners breathe and be themselves, no matter where they work and live.
Jim Little is proof of that, and this is his story:
10 Questions with Minuteman Press Franchise Owner Jim Little, Burlington, Wisconsin
1. What was your background before franchising with Minuteman Press?
“I grew up in agriculture and worked as an LTL truck driver before deciding to venture into my own business. This particular shop was attractive to me because it was in a community about the same size as the one I grew up in. I felt a business in this type of community would allow me to be me. The people I grew up with are down to earth and hardworking folks, and being in Burlington feels like home.”
2. Why did you choose to franchise with Minuteman Press?
“I chose to look into a business of my own because I wanted to be my own boss. I had two Minuteman Press franchise owners both recommend Minuteman Press, and I really found their franchise model and business plan to be attractive.”
3. How would you compare you experience as a Minuteman Press franchise owner to your previous career/industry/life?
“The responsibilities of being a business owner can get stressful at times. However, I find it extremely satisfying knowing that we play a big part in helping our employees make a living wage to support their families. Keeping small business alive and supporting other small businesses is also important to me. I try to use local venders (small business) whenever possible.”
4. How has the ongoing local support you’ve received from Minuteman Press helped you along the way?
“I really appreciate the fact that there is ongoing training for myself and for my employees from Minuteman Press International. This training along with the advice of the local staff and their wisdom in helping direct me through the process of growing the shop is invaluable.”
Jim’s kind words for the local support team and Minuteman Press as a whole is reciprocated by Doug Harlan, Minuteman Press International Regional Vice President for the Chicago region. Doug says, “Jim Little is reliable, fun, smart, and very active everywhere he goes. He takes care of his employees and treats people right, and Jim has set a positive example for other Minuteman Press owners. Jim was recently a key speaker at a meeting with other owners in the region, and last year he was selected for the Minuteman Press International President’s Panel during our World Expo. He is a role model and a real champion for small business owners, and we are proud to have him as part of our franchise family.”
5. What is a typical day like for you as a Minuteman Press owner?
“I usually begin my day making deliveries to my customers and touching base with my business network base (Chamber of Commerce, networking groups, etc.). After that, I head to the shop to quote and work with my staff to process work orders and invoices. Usually 3 days per week, I personally participate in the Work in Progress meeting, but my staff runs through it every day.”
6. What is your ideal day off or way to relax?
“My ideal day off would be simply cruising on my motorcycle or jeep on a warm summer day. Knowing that back at the shop my awesome staff will call in an emergency, but being confident my staff will handle daily production and work flow.”
7. What are some of your passionate causes, hobbies, or outside interests?
“Physical fitness is important to me. I also enjoy riding my motorcycle, cruising in my Jeep and coaching high school football.”
8. What are your business goals?
“My goals are to get a good handle on cost of sales. We are working on putting checks and balances into place to maximize efficiency and raise sales goals by 10%.”
9. What is one inspirational quote that has helped you along the way either in life or in business?
“I’m not much on ‘quotes’ but there are a few things I strive for each day. First, wake up and find one positive thing each morning and build off of it. I feel like if you make everyday a ‘Friday’ your week goes faster. Everyone loves Friday!”
10. What are one or two pieces of advice you would give to potential franchise owners?
“You have to participate in clubs and organizations and be active in them: Networking, networking, networking. Self-involvement in your community is huge, and so is marketing your business. You have to ASK for the sale!”
