A virtuoso performance is one typically associated with elite musicians or those exceptional in areas of artistic pursuit. After only four years as owners of Minuteman Press in Liverpool, Adam and Phillip Anderson not only found their rhythm as marketing services providers, they coupled their own talents with that of printing industry leader, Minuteman Press International. For that choice and the great satisfaction of the community they serve they can join the chorus of fellow franchisees who can say “We Are The Modern Printing Industry”.
Virtuosity has extended into an entirely new life for Phillip to the great benefit of all of his clients. He is an accomplished conductor, composer, and one of Australia’s foremost leaders in wind band music and he has a genuine care for all he does, maintaining an impeccable standard. His son and partner in business, Adam, a former member of the Australian Army and French Foreign Legion, offers a theme of resilience against adversity and dedication that permeates their centre when demands are high and people are counting upon them.
“It has been a big ‘sea change’ for us and there have been many challenges to overcome; not least of all, the day to day operations of a digital print, design and marketing centre,” Phillip remarks. He remains grateful for the consistent loyalty from his franchisor in the form of training and support whenever it is needed. “Fortunately, we have benefitted from great support from the Minuteman Press field representatives and our Area Manager, Jeff Lewis. They truly are experts in their field and it would have been impossible to gather new customers and operate the business without their support and encouragement.”
Prior to franchise ownership, Phillip’s outstanding record of military service was recognised in the 2004 Queen’s Birthday Honours by being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. He enjoyed the privilege of leading one of Australia’s premier military ensembles as the Director of Music of the Royal Australian Navy Band from 2002 until 2012 and proudly wears the Australian Active Service and Iraq Campaign Medals.
In amongst his role at Minuteman Press Liverpool, Phillip conducts the school Orchestra and Advanced Wind Band at SCEGGS Redland and is a guest conductor at music events at home and abroad.
The father and son team now own and operate a Minuteman Press franchise in Liverpool, Australia with particular roles defined that are naturally aligned with their talents. Adam is the face of the business. He is the ‘doer’ and Phillip is the “wise head” behind the business, according to Phillip. He explains, “We have plans for expansion and to grow the business through immersing ourselves in the community and building trust with our customers. Adam is well known in the community and until recently was the Vice President of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Industry. (See: starsofsydneysw2018.everydayhero.com/au/adam-anderson)
In the 2010 list of Australian Bravery Awards, Adam was acknowledged with a Group Bravery Citation for his role in saving three people from a perilous situation at sea. He is a Director of Minuteman Press Liverpool and also a Director of Alliance Networking Group. His energy and drive helped the business achieve the 2016 Liverpool Council Australia Day Small Business Award, the 2016 Liverpool Small Business Award as Most Outstanding New Business and the 2017 Liverpool Small Business Award for Business Person of the Year.”
Adam is also a member of the Tourism and Events Committee and the Central Business Committee of the Liverpool City Council. He is an enthusiastic contributor to fundraising activities for Not-For-Profit organisations in Liverpool and was first elected to the Board of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2015, becoming the Vice President of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2017. If that is not impressive enough, he is a dance participant in the Stars of Sydney South West which is raising money for the Cancer Council of New South Wales. Phillip adds, “He has zero dance experience; but has two sisters who have danced professionally so maybe dance is in his blood! Adam is most excited about supporting an amazing charity and having fun doing it.”
Meliorism, the idea that the world is made better by human effort is also a common theme within the workings of a Minuteman Press franchise. Phillip and Adam see to it that their Liverpool centre actualizes this. “We support the Police Citizen’s Youth Club https://www.pcycnsw.org.au/liverpool/ and Ingham Institute https://inghaminstitute.org.au/ by providing free print products each year and we also provide work opportunities for people from disadvantaged backgrounds who are trying to get back into the workforce.”
Phillip noticed that his new role, providing marketing services, is similar in exciting ways to his last position as the Leader of the Royal Australian Navy Band and this provides an added sense of satisfaction. “Both jobs have a high creative element. We create products and deliver services to our customers. In my previous life, my team composed, arranged music and delivered ceremonial services for performances to audiences ashore and afloat. In the print shop, we create engaging designs and deliver the finished product to our customers. Those designs make their way into the hands of thousands of people whether it be in the form of the traditional flyer or brochure or on a promotion product or as an eye-catching sign on a vehicle or shop front.”
Jeff Lewis is the Area Manager for NSW/QLD and he knows well the reason for the continued success of Minuteman Press in Liverpool. He says, “The Andersons clearly demonstrate what it means to be a family business. Their strong family values can be felt among their community. Whether they are donating their time to charities or helping another business grow, their presence is felt. They take pride in their business and it shines thru with exceptional service and top-quality work. The Andersons have big hearts which is why they are loved by their loyal customers and peers.”
“The most gratifying jobs (which are not necessarily the ones with the highest profit margins) are the ones we do for other small business owners, people like us who are trying to make their way in a very competitive field.” – Phillip Anderson, owner of Minuteman Press in Liverpool, AU
“It is always gratifying to see their eyes light up when they receive the finished product with creative text and eye-catching graphics that we have taken from concept and into the hands of their customers,” according to Phillip. He touches on one of the central intentions of every Minuteman Press franchise, “Yes, we are printers; but we do much more than just business cards and flyers! We help our customers connect with their communities.”
Prudential Real Estate Australia’s ally is Minuteman Press in Liverpool for the tools needed to help people protect their greatest assets.
Phillip and Adam see to it that everything that is designed and printed to represent Prudential not only meets their brand standard, but that it exceeds what is common, so it stands out from the crowd. “Our major client is Simon Perri from Prudential Real Estate. Simon became our client through our involvement in the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Industry. We provide design services, signboards, flyers with letterbox delivery, invitation cards, and correspondence using mail merge technology for delivery by the postal service.”
The partnership with Phillip and Adam from Minuteman Press in Liverpool has been a “breath of fresh air” according to Simon Perri, Director of Prudential Real Estate. “The prime advantages that my business has had working with Phillip and Adam is the ability to get my printing done quickly, accurately and efficiently with great quality. Response is crucial in a real estate agent world, and presentation is what sets up apart. With the previous printers they would take approximately 3 – 5 days to print a brochure of which I would then have to organise to have delivered around every home, whenever a home comes to market or just sold. Obviously the announcement is a crucial impact to our business and the quicker the response the better the result,” according to Simon. “Working with Minuteman Press in Liverpool and receiving the personal services from Phillip and Adam, this process is done for me within 48 hours. Everything is printed and delivered which allows me to be at the forefront of my customers. No one that I am aware of can provide me with this service. I have looked around everywhere.”
If the future is defined by our ability to channel our passions, be resilient and loyal to those who need us, Phillip and Adam will continue to make great strides themselves and on behalf of their clients. Simon agrees, adding, “Their quality is great and the best thing about it all is that I am dealing with normal people, no huge business that requires multiple layers of management to get something done. As a small business owner time is of essence and knowing that I am dealing with the right person this is important to me, so we can get on with the job. I have no problem advocating the great services and work that Phillip, Adam and the team at Minuteman Press do for my business.”
