July 28, 2012 by James
Tomorrow, the 2012 Paddle to Squaxin Landing will take place, leaving the Port of Olympia located at 915 Wellington Street N.E. in Olympia, Washington. The gates at the NorthPoint Landing will be open on July 29 at 10:00 am and the landing ceremonies are expected to take place around 1:00 pm.
The Squaxin Island Indian Tribe are the official hosts for this canoe journey and are being assisted by volunteers from Thurston County, the Port of Olympia, and the City of Olympia, as well as the Intercity Transit who are providing a shuttle service to and from the parking area every 15 minutes. Parking will be near 8th Street and Plum Street.
There will be approximately 130 tribal canoes arriving in Olympia and all landing activities will take place in the NorthPoint Area in the Port of Olympia. Indigenous people by the thousands will have travelled by water to reach the landing destination. Besides the landing, this event will feature vendors offering food, arts, crafts, and various merchandised products. There will be an information booth for the distribution of community information available during the event, which may have integrated brochure and flyer printing carried out by local print companies, and many booths will be set up in the downtown core as well. After the event, the Squaxin Indian Tribe will enjoy week-long pot-latching protocols and events with their guests.
