Hiking at Mount St. Helens

March 19, 2012 by

On Monday, April 2nd, 2012 the Wilderness Hiking with Mount St. Helens Club will be hosting a nature walk around Mount St. Helens. These nature hikes take place on Mondays and Saturdays between 9am and 5pm. Monday’s hikes are easy to more moderate and usually consist of three to seven miles at less than 1000 feet; whereas, Saturday’s hikes are moderate to difficult at five to twelve miles at over 1000 feet, and are meant for the experience person.

The club requires that all guests visit their website and read the guidelines provided by their group. These guidelines are essential to ensure everyone has a safe and happy hike, so the group leader will ask if you have read them and have the documents requested. Hikers are requested to pack a day pack with sunscreen, sunglasses, compass, multi-tool, duct tape, sewing kit, waterproof matches, lighter, first aid kit, spare batteries for lighting hands free headlamp, toilet paper and hand toweling, food, water, snacks – extra for emergencies, whistle, extra clothing and footwear, rain gear, and an emergency shelter with tarp and Mylar blanket. In this climate, organizers never know what the weather will bring and require everyone to be self-sufficient and prepared.

The Mount St. Helens Club is a membership organization that is open to new guests who wish to try out the activities before joining, and they have regularly scheduled pot luck meals at meetings and events. Currently, there are about 100 members who actively participate. The goal of this club is to enjoy nature and friends and during the winter months the club switches from hikes to x-country skiing, and snowshoeing, plus also actively participates in biking, camping, canoeing, and picnicking.

Print companies may supply some of the stationery printing for this organization, as they have many events shared with members each year. To find out more about this club, visit the club’s website or call 360-636-4575. New guests are always welcome.
