Orem to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with traditional events

March 8, 2014 by

Later this month, Orem’s leprechauns and banshees will want to be “a wearin’ o’ the green” as they attend the Hibernian Society’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

To get things started, there will be the traditional ‘Blessing of the Keg’ which will kick off the week-long event. The St. Paddy’s Day Parade will follow the next day, and families with Irish surnames will be included as part of this year’s procession, entitled ‘Gift of the Gaels… a Legacy of Legend and Myth’.

The parade will be followed by a traditional Irish celebration known as Siamsa where Utah’s best Irish dance schools and Irish music by Utah artists will be featured. Special guests at the Siamsa will be world renowned artists Jim O’ the Mills from Thurles in County Tipperary, Ireland.

Fortunately for the region’s Irish music lovers, the group will be giving a concert the next evening and will also serve as guests of honor at music sessions throughout the week, giving local musicians a chance to jam with some of the best. Some attendees may want to visit a local printing company to have pictures made into posters.

All of the week’s events will be free. The parade and Siamsa will be March 15 starting at 10:00 am at Gateway Grand Hall in Salt Lake City.
