Vocal competition to warm up local larynxes

January 19, 2013 by

The Opera Theatre Vocal Competition Concert is being presented by Brava! Opera Theater and the James M. Collier Young Artist Program this weekend and is a renowned national contest created to recognize talented young operatic candidates. This is the second annual event and will include singers from across the nation, so people in the area should not be surprised to see poster printing promoting it and encouraging local songsters to lend their voice to the experts.

Singers from all over America will be competing for three prizes that total $5,000. Brava Opera Theater and the James M. Collier Young Artist Program is a fairly new operatic venture that began in 2010 and was created by Willene Gunn, the Artistic Director, and Lorrie Hall, the General Director.

Gunn worked at the Director of the Opera Program from 1975 to 2005 for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and then moved on to take the position of Artist Director at the Rogue Opera, where she remained until 2009. Hunter, meanwhile, is a graduate from Julliard and the vocal coach and pianist at Southern Oregon University (SOU).

Admission is free and everyone is welcome. The Opera Theatre Vocal Competition Concert will be taking place on Sunday, January 20, starting at 1:00 pm at the SOU Music Recital Hall located at 405 S. Mountain Avenue in Ashland, Oregon, just down the road from Medford. To learn more, please visit the SOU website or call the office at 541-261-5776.
