Scottsdale hosting first walk to fight lupus
April 17, 2013 by Sarah
Scottsdale residents will soon have the opportunity to make history by participating in the area’s first official ‘Walk Against Lupus Now’ event.
The services of a poster printing company are likely being used to promote this fundraiser, which is becoming increasingly popular across the country.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can cause problems in any organ. It primarily affects females between the ages of 15 and 44. The organizers of the Scottsdale walk aim to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for more scientific research on the subject.
Lupus is treatable in most cases, but as of yet there is no cure for it and approximately 90,000 Arizonans currently suffer from the condition. The event will feature a place for the friends and family members of lupus victims to record the names of their lost loved ones.
The walk is part of a larger movement under the direction of the Lupus Foundation of America. The city of Scottsdale is serving as a co-sponsor of the event, while Mayor Jim Lane has volunteered to be its honorary chairperson. Lane will host the opening ceremony for the walk, kicking off a new local tradition.
The event will be open to participants of all ages. Those who are interested may register online or call (877) 910-9779. Individuals and groups may also create their own fundraising web pages.
The walk will take place on Saturday, April 27, at Chaparral Park. Check-in will begin at 8:00 am and the festivities will start an hour later.
