Pittsburgh to showcase some gingerbread houses
November 30, 2012 by Sarah
The 10th annual Gingerbread House Display and Competition is running until January 7, 2013, with houses exhibited at Two PPF Place in the Wintergarden. Admission is free but donations to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh‘s Free Care Fund are encouraged.
Entries in the gingerbread house competition will be judged on originality and creativity, difficulty, overall appearance and appeal, and precision and neatness. There will also be 17 categories of entrants, including non-profit organization, elementary school, family, culinary, and professional. In addition to the display of gingerbread houses, Don Jones will also be exhibiting trains from his private collection.
Gingerbread houses have become a traditional Christmas item for some and there are people who take great joy from seeing what others can do with them. Those who are fans of the gingerbread house are likely to travel from all around the area, including Plum, to see them. It is likely that organizers of the display and competition have worked with local printing companies to help get the word out about this annual display. Attending this event will be a great way to celebrate the season and to revel in the creativity of others. Guests can also enjoy the Christmas tree and the lights, enjoy some ice skating, and many will maybe do some Christmas shopping in the retail stores in PPG Place, with everyone aware that the big day is approaching.
The display will be open daily, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. For more information call 412-434-1900.

Short trip to celebrate Milltown Day on the horizon
September 23, 2012 by Mark
The 15th annual Milltown Day celebration will take place at Borough Park in about a fortnight. There will be plenty of activities in which to take part during the day, including a community fair, an art and craft fair, and a business expo.
The arts and crafts fair will be offering handmade and unique items for sale, the community fair will feature information from local organizations and government services, and the business expo will help to showcase local companies. There will also be lots of activities for the children such as face painting, a pet show, a giant slide, and skee-ball. Other activities will include a blood drive, a child ID drive, a county document shredding truck for those who do not have a shredder, and a morning clean-up. This will be a community festival in every sense of the phrase.
Artists and businesses from all over the area, such as nearby Plum, will no doubt be taking part in Milltown Day. Local printing companies are probably being asked to provide services such as banner printing and flyer printing to help them prepare. This will be an excellent opportunity for emerging artists and business owners to introduce themselves to the community, with sponsorships also available to local businesses.
It all takes place on October 6 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. This is a free event presented by the Milltown Revitalization Committee. For more information, the best thing to do might be to visit the event’s website and drop the organizers an email.
