Charity luncheon will expand shelter at Hope’s Door

A luncheon which was held on Friday 14 June this year was the ultimate celebration of a year long collaboration between Hope’s Door and Attorneys Serving the Community.

Hope’s Door is a non-profit organization which offers shelter to women and children fleeing from domestic violence. A year ago, the organization, which opened in 1986, partnered with ASC, a group of female attorneys from Dallas who help charities in the area, to work towards achieving their goal of being able to help all the women who approach the organization.

The star guest at the luncheon was actress Kathy Najimy, who has appeared in movies Hocus Pocus and Sister Act among others, who spoke of her passion at addressing issues with self image and domestic violence. Pat Smith, who was previously married to Emmitt Smith, a former Dallas Cowboy star, was the honorary co-chairwoman and has been a volunteer at the organization for many years. She spoke of how the women and children at the shelter helped her recognize her own suffering. A victim of domestic violence was also invited to speak at the luncheon of her own experiences and how the shelter had helped her to move on with her life.

Although the final totals raised at the luncheon are not yet known, $375,000 has already been raised by the group during the last year. To promote awareness of the organization and fund raising events, the group may call on the local print company for help with flyers and posters.
