Allen students celebrate research success with showcase event

An end of year showcase event was held at the end of June to celebrate the success of students from three Allen schools that worked on environmental projects at Trinity River Audubon Center, Dallas.

Students from Ereckson Middle School, Allen High School, and Olson Elementary gathered at the showcase event to share their project details and results with other Texas students. Over 50 students were present to celebrate their enthusiastic service provided in the community, the development of leadership skills, and scientific research carried out.

Healthy Habitats, which is a non-profit organization, hosted the event and recently provided grants of $30,000 to Allen ISD Schools, enabling the implementation of community projects involving research of the environment. Service Learning Texas, Esri, Texas Stream Team, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. are the sponsors of Healthy Habitats, with 14 school projects in Texas being supported this year. As some of Healthy Habitats funding has ended recently, more sponsors are being sought out in addition to individual groups, perhaps using a print company to produce literature providing information.

One student, Alanis Rivera, enthused about the project, talking about the learning experience, the opportunity to share experiences with other students in the community, and how much fun the project had been. It is hoped that the students will maintain the projects which have been started, thus continuing to build their knowledge. The program from Healthy Habitats has also provided support for projects carried out by students, looking at concerns of the Texas Conservation Action Plan.
