Mardi Gras in downtown Phoenix

Phoenix area residents will soon have the opportunity to experience a taste of New Orleans culture without straying far from home.

On Saturday, February 9, the downtown section of arizona’s capital city will be hosting its own Mardi Gras celebration. Printing companies will likely see an increase in business as the event’s organizers and vendors create flyers, posters, and other promotional materials in anticipation of the festivities.

The highlight of the party will be the parade, which is set to begin on Central Avenue at 4:00 pm. Representatives from local organizations will ride through the streets on floats of their own design. Area marching bands will also perform. Since parents are encouraged to bring young children to this portion of the event, all participants will be wearing masks and costumes that have been deemed appropriate for family audiences.

In a separate “festival” area, attendees will be invited to sample New Orleans-style food and purchase traditional Mardi Gras costumes from a variety of vending booths. They will also have access to a beer garden and get live entertainment from such groups as Flamenco por la Vida, Bad Cactus Brass Band, and Dry River Yacht Club. The festival will last from 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Between 9:00 pm and 1:00 am, numerous establishments will be participating in a “pub crawl”. For $15, those interested in hitting the bars may reserve trolley tickets and become part of a Mardi Crawl Krewe. Each ‘krewe’ will feature its own tour guide.
