During the month of September, the Southwest Tennessee District Senior Olympics will be taking place in Jackson and Savannah. Athletes aged 49 and up and who live within 30 miles of the state line are eligible to compete.

Those who take part in the district games can qualify for the Tennessee State Senior Olympics to be held in 2014 which will help them to enter the 2015 National Senior Games. There are male and female as well as age categories which range in ages from 50-54 to 95 and up. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each age and sex category.

The aim of the games is to promote fitness among the elderly and anyone can apply to compete. Athletes compete in a number of sports such as table tennis, track and field, shuffleboard, basketball, softball and horseshoes. Events will take place in several venues in Jackson including the South Jackson Community Center, the University School of Jackson and the First United Methodist Church.

No doubt many seniors will make the trip to Jackson to compete in these games. Local printing companies are no doubt helping the organizers of the event prepare. This could include the design and printing of banners and posters.

The Southwest Tennessee District Senior Olympics will take place from September 9 to October 1. Registration fees are $20 plus and extra $25 for those competing in golf and $7 for those taking part in bowling. For more information about the games contact Linda Kauffman at 731-425-8614.
