Local businesses compete to see who is the healthiest

In an effort to promote wellness, the Gaston Family YMCA is hosting a competition for various sized Gaston County businesses.
The winning company will receive the Gaston Cup after competing in three local 5K runs over the course of 2013. The first, ‘Run for the Money’, will be held in Gastonia this weekend. Now celebrating its 10th year, it is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Gaston County. It raises money for more than 100 nonprofits in the county and has, to date, turned $10m over to them. Two more races will follow later this year.
Points are to be awarded to each company for its level of participation in each race. With a dozen local companies signed up in categories based on size, the benefits are both internal and external. The publicity will be good for each company regardless of whether they win, and businesses will probably be contacting stationery printers to have them include their participation in future printings.
Internally, the training involved in getting ready for the race will encourage company unity, as well as improving morale and the health of participating employees. As an added bonus, companies may be in a position to bargain with their health insurance provider if enough employees take part.
The first race is set for this Saturday, April 20. The second, The Grizzlies 5K, will be held on July 26, while the third one is the Spencer Mountain Road Race taking place on November 9.
