Trader Joe’s nears opening in South Tampa

February 26, 2014 by

Trader Joe’s, the California chain of specialty grocery stores, is nearly ready to open its doors in South Tampa.

The company has yet to announce a formal opening date, but the building, located on Swann Avenue, appears to be almost finished. This is the first Trader Joe’s in the region.

Two other Trader Joe’s are slated to open in the area. Construction is underway on a Winter Park location and, in St. Petersburg, a new store will go up at 28th Avenue North and 4th Street. The latter store, which will comprise 12,500 square feet, is slated to open late in 2015. The announcement of this store came less than three months after the chain stated its intention to open the Swann Avenue venue.

Trader Joe’s has been looking for sites in the Tampa area to locate its stores for some time. Bill Foster, St. Petersburg’s mayor, suggests that the chain recognized the city’s potential, leading it to start operations there. In addition to the St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Winter Park locations, Trader Joe’s plans to open in Boca Raton, Jacksonville Beach, Delray Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Orlando, and Wellington.

Company officials could work with brochure printers to create a mailer for city residents, announcing the opening and inviting them to the store. They could also consult a banner printing company to create colorful flags for the opening.
