New Epicurean Hotel to open in South Tampa

The new Epicurean Hotel will open in December in South Tampa, adding not only accommodations but great food to the cityscape.

A ‘topping out’ ceremony was held on May 2 to mark the end of construction, and was attended by development partners, supporters, guests, and elected officials. The partners are Joe Collier and David Laxer, the former of Mainsail Lodging & Development and the latter with Bern’s Steak House. The partnership between the two men is indicative of the close relationship between lodging and food represented by the hotel, which is described as a ‘food-centric’ establishment.

Most hotels have a restaurant and perhaps a coffee shop, but the new Epicurean Hotel takes things a step beyond that. On the ground floor, visitors will find a pastry shop, several trendy restaurants and a wine store run by Bern’s Steak House, which is across the street from the new hotel. There is also a rooftop lounge, and enthusiastic supporters say the Epicurean will be as sophisticated as anything in Chicago or New York.

The idea for a hotel centered on food is an outgrowth of a study carried out by Collier on Bern’s Steak House receipts. The famed eatery hosts nearly 500 customers every night, 60% of whom are visitors to Tampa. Collier’s development team saw a synergy between an upscale restaurant and a luxury hotel right across the street, especially one acknowledging the importance of good food.

The hotel could work with brochure printers and create an attractive piece for display at the airport, train station, and other public locations, describing its philosophy and offering specials to bring in customers as it begins operating.
