The exhibit Pieces of Jamaica is showing at the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery from January 6-February 25, 2012. The exhibit features the Jamaican photographs of David I. Muir. A grand opening and reception will take place on Friday, January 6 from 6:15-8:30 pm. Admission is free. The gallery is normally open Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am-5:pm and Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon-7 pm.

David I. Muir works as a commercial photographer; he specializes in advertising photography, event photography and fine art photography. He was born in Jamaica and has been a professional photographer since the 1980s; he now lives and works in the Fort Lauderdale area. The Pieces of Jamaica exhibit features the photographer’s memories of Jamaica and, as he states, “it is my intent to reclaim memories of Jamaica through my lens.” The exhibit, which has been shown at other art galleries, has gotten a lot of attention and favorable press in newspapers and on television.

The photographer’s work in advertising is not at all rare for a professional photographer; printing companies, including those in Sunrise, often work closely with photographers when designing brochures, flyers and business cards. While they can purchase stock photographs, working with local photographers ensures they get the most fitting and appropriate photograph that matches the content.

The Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery often hosts exhibits by local artists. There is a lot of talent to be found in the area and the gallery is very proud to show the range of talent there is.
