Florida police department receives potentially lifesaving gift

A generous donation from a nonprofit organization has made work safer for St. Cloud K-9s.

The donation of two armored vests, designed specifically for K-9 officers, was received on February 9. The vests were a gift from Vested Interest, a nonprofit group headquartered in Massachusetts that helps to protect K-9s around the country. The vests are bullet- and stab-proof and provide ample protection when working in unsafe situations.

The vests can cost as much as $2,000 apiece, which is more than many police departments can afford. The result is a loss of life that is often devastating to the members of the community and the police department that consider their canine officers to be one of the family.

In many cases, the K-9 officers are the first to enter dangerous situations and come face to face with criminals. The 5-pound vests in St. Cloud will protect officers Axle and Endo, who are the only two canines currently in service at the St. Cloud Police Station.

Orlando area businesses that want to contribute to protecting local K-9 officers can partner with Vested Interest. Fundraisers could include relevant promotional products like branded dog collars, ID tags, and other pet-related goods that may attract attention. Contact the organization directly or visit its website to learn how to contribute to the effort.
