Girl Scout cookie season begins in Largo

The price for each box of cookies remains at $3.50 and the size and quantity within the box will remain the same. The varieties of cookies from which to choose include Samoas, Thin Mints, Savannah Smiles, Dulce de Leche, Tagalongs, Thank You Berry Munch, Do-Si-Dos, and Trefoils. Poster printing and flyer printing are no doubt being used by the Girl Scouts to remind people in the community that it is the time of year to buy cookies.
The cookie box will also provide additional information about the cookie program, which is designed to help individual girl scouts with the five objectives of setting goals, making decisions, managing money, building people skills, and considering ethics with regard to business.
This year, a new program will be instated by the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida called a Gift of Caring program. This is designed for those who want to support the Girl Scouts in their efforts but do not want the cookies themselves. People can purchase the cookies and then donate them to military troops serving overseas in combat zones. Those who wish to be involved in this program need to contact a Girl Scout directly.
The Girl Scout cookie program began in 1917 when Girl Scouts baked cookies in their homes, along with their mothers as technical advisors. The girls sold the cookies in the cafeterias of high schools as service projects and then, in the 1920s, went door-to-door to sell them.
