Wheelchair Games coming to Tampa

June 28, 2013 by

The 33rd annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games will be taking place in Tampa for six days next month.

The games will allow competitors to take part in a number of sporting events. There will be 18 sports in all to be featured at the games, and these will include handcycling, basketball, bowling, swimming, trap shooting, and weightlifting. There will also be a waterski exhibition and a power soccer clinic. In addition, there will be several breakfasts, lunches, and dinners for the athletes and their coaches.

The opening ceremonies will take place at the Tampa Bay Times Forum on July 13 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and the sporting events will begin the next day. A special Kids Day also be taking place during the games on July 15 and will allow local physically disabled children a chance to meet the athletes and take part in sporting events. Those hoping to register for Kids Day can call 706-589-1229.

Concurrent to the games, the Disabled Sports, Recreation & Fitness Exposition will feature over 50 organizations that will showcase their products and services aimed at the disabled community.

This event will no doubt attract people from all over, including nearby Brandon. Local printing companies will probably be providing the organizers with flyers and brochures to help market the games in the community.

The games are still looking for more volunteers. Those who are interested can contact Camilla Thompson at 813-972-2000 x6580 for more information.

The National Veterans Wheelchair Games’ headquarters will held at the Tampa Bay Convention Center from July 13-18.
