Why not try speed networking for a change?

The Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce today host a speed networking event at Chili’s Grill and Bar on January 19 from 8-9: 30 am. The event was free for Chamber members who had to book in advance.
Speed networking is similar to speed dating in which you are allowed only a certain amount of time to talk to a person one-on-one. It is recommended that if you are planning to attend a speed networking event that you practice and perfect your “elevator pitch.”
An “elevator pitch” shouldn’t be longer than 1 minute and should describe your job responsibilities, your company information and let the person know the type of connections that you are looking for. As always, make sure you arrange for business card printing before attending such events.
Whatever event you attend, you will want to have enough cards to hand out to all of your Providence business peers; you might also want to bring along a brochure with detailed information about your business.
There are many tips to remember when speed networking. You should first find out what the format of the event will be and how much time you have with each person and plan accordingly. When you meet new people the first thing you should do is to exchange cards. In addition to giving your own “elevator pitch” make sure you listen to what they are also saying. Finally, don’t attempt a hard sell, just exchange cards, find out about the other company and if you are interested in what they have to offer promise that you will follow up.
