Five influential women to be recognized

The Legacy Awards luncheon is taking place at the end of March and includes a presentation of the Ranking/Mon Valley/Pittsburgh PA section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW). It will recognize five women who have dedicated their lives to the advancement of African American history and culture.

The five honorees are Alma Speed Fox, Jean Bryant, Melo Myers, Beatrice Morrison, and Mary Savage. All five women are over 80 years of age and from the Western Pennsylvania area, and all have made significant contributions to preserving and advancing African American culture.

Sabrina Saunders of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh has been named as the emcee, and the guest speaker will be Shirley Moore Smeal of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. The lunch should be a great opportunity for local businesspersons to grow their referral networks, as there will be plenty of time over lunch to discuss business.

Before lunch is served, those attending will also have the opportunity to shop in the marketplace. No doubt this will feature local Pittsburgh companies who sell items of interest to women, most of them are likely be working with local printing companies to prepare such items as signs and business cards. The latter can be exchanged with fellow vendors or can be distributed to those who purchase a product.

The NCNW Legacy Awards luncheon will take place at the Hosanna House Ballroom on March 30 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. Tickets are $35. Those who need more information about the event can contact either Delores Dupree at 412-661-1909 or Flora Jackson at 412-351-NCNW.
