Cranberry Township’s Sister Cities Association is sponsoring a free family-friendly Chinese New Year’s celebration on January 21, 2012 from 1-3 pm. The event will held in the HeartPrints Center for Early Education at the Regional Learning Alliance in Cranberry Woods.
The Sister Cities Association is holding this event in part to honor Cranberry Township’s sister city of Haiyang, China. The event will be celebrating Chinese year 4710, the year of the dragon. Chinese New Year is the most important event in the Chinese calendar. There will be lots of activities to take part in such as Chinese storytime with Little Linguists, Chinese dance performances, arts and crafts demonstrations, door prizes and even a Chinese language lesson. There will also be giveaways and free tastes of Chinese food. Cranberry Township printing companies will probably be busy helping to create banners, many in the Chinese language, and posters to help to decorate the HeartPrints Center for this event.
The Sister Cities Association is located in Zelienople was founded to encourage “artistic, cultural, and professional exchanges with communities worldwide.” Sister cities also have a trade component and business is often exchanged between the two communities. Sister cities are useful in showing each culture how the other one lives, the connection helps to create better understanding between the two cultures. Their history may be different, the political system may be different and there may be many different cultural norms, but people are basically the same no matter where they come from.
