Cross-sport celebration comes to Bala Cynwyd

October 1, 2013 by

Later this month, more than 100 golfers will gather to golf for a good cause.

For the past nine years, a golf tournament has raised money for the Mister D Scholarship Fund of the Narberth Basketball League. The tournament is held at Cobbs Creek Golf Course, in Upper Darby, near Bala Cynwyd. The event is named in honor of William Draper, known as ‘Mr. D’ to his friends and fellow basketball players.

Mr. D worked with the Narberth Basketball League for more than 50 years. A bench with his name on it now sits in Narberth Park. The basketball league has started a summer team named after him, too. The scholarship in his name is given each year to basketball players who have the ‘Mr. D Attitude’.

Along with raising funds for the scholarship, the yearly golf outing is a way for Mr. D’s friends to remember him fondly. Local businesses have come together to support the event by offering giveaways and raffle items. Businesses also have the option of sponsoring holes on the golf course. Print companies can support the event by producing flyers, posters, and other promotional items.

Golfers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate in the tournament on October 12. Tee time is at 10:00 am, and an after-party will follow at McGillicuddy’s in Upper Darby, which will feature contests and prizes. Donations are still being accepted and can be sent to the Mr D. Scholarship Fund of Narberth Basketball, P.O. Box 147, Narberth, PA 19072.
