Broadway has the Tony Awards, and students at schools in the Lehigh Valley have the Freddy Awards, preparations for which are taking place this month.

The yearly awards ceremony recognizes excellence in high school theater in the area. It was created by Easton‘s State Theater. This year, 31 schools, including several near Allentown, will be participating.

‘Shrek the Musical’ was one of the first shows presented this year for award consideration. It was performed at Southern Lehigh High School last weekend. Bangor Area High School also presented a show the first weekend in March, putting on ‘Seussical’. The shows could use poster printing to advertise the performances.

The next few days will see a number of musicals at several schools. Catasauqua High School in Allen Township will produce ‘Big River’ from March 6 through March 9. Easton Area High School will be presenting ‘the Scarlet Pimpernel’ March 7 through 9, while Northwestern Lehigh High School in New Tripoli will be producing ‘Footloose’ on March 6 through 9.

Several shows are scheduled for later in the month, all of them vying for Freddy Awards. Belvidere High School, over in New Jersey, will present ‘Pippin’ on March 14 and 15. There will be two performances on March 15, one at 1:30 pm and the other at 7:30 pm. Wilson Area High School in Allentown will present the musical version of ‘Little Women’ March 14 through March 16.

The award ceremony for the Freddys is scheduled for May 22 at 7:00 pm, at the State Theater.
