Dance school offers classes to children

June 2, 2012 by

The Northern Westchester School of Dance recently opened its doors in Katonah, a suburb of Mount Kisco. The dance school offers classes for ages 3 – 18 with a wide variety of dance styles, including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and modern dance. A dance troupe called Rhapsody is managed by the school as well.

The area’s only dance school previously was the Main Street Arts Center, which closed suddenly last year, leaving the Mount Kisco and surrounding community without a dance entity.

Two local women, Kathi-Jo Hubner and Lynda Griffin, teamed up to establish a new school of dance and worked diligently once they rented space to turn it into a dance studio. Community dance supporters and residents joined together to help with renovations, which consisted of cleaning, installing new flooring, painting, upholstering chairs and benches, and adding equipment such as mirrors and ballet bars.

Several dance classes are offered for young children, ages 3 – 5, including Broadway Babies and Happy Feet. Specialty classes for ages 5 – 7 include Princess Ballet and Jazzy Tappers. A tap-dance class offered for advance level students entitled “The Rhythm’s Gonna Getcha” is available to students with at least five years of tap training.

Local printing companies work with the dance school in providing flyer printing services, in addition to banner, brochure and postcard printing. Now that the new school is open and children have another opportunity to hone their dance skills, Mount Kisco print companies will join the staff at North Westchester School of Dance in spreading the good news.
