Columbus Day weekend brings many events to Merrick area

With the Columbus Day weekend fast approaching, a multitude of special events and activities are going on in Merrick and the surrounding communities. No doubt poster and banner printing are being used to make people in the area aware of these events so as to make the holiday weekend a memorable one and generate a healthy interest in the events.

This Sunday, October 13th, there will be the Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk of Long Island in Wantagh at Jones Beach. With proceeds going to the pancreatic cancer research group the Lustgarten Foundation, the walk has two options—a one-mile or three-mile hike along the boardwalk of Jones Beach. Now, more than 7,000 people participate in the walk every year and the walk has raised more than $9.3m since it started 13 years ago.

Also on Sunday is the Race for the INN 5K, a flat 5K walk or run through Seaford and its tree-lined streets, with proceeds going to support the Interfaith Nutrition Network, an providing food and shelter for the homeless people on Long Island. A chance at some raffles is included with the registration fee.

Another fundraiser on the same day is Tina’s 5th Annual Run for a cure to take place in the evening at the Governor’s Comedy Club in Levittown. Proceeds from the ticket sales go to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the team behind the event is trying to raise $100,000 for its own research grant.
