A gem of a show comes to Freeport
October 9, 2012 by James
The Freeport waterfront will host the third and final Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show of 2012. With 25–30 vendors offering both loose gemstones and finished jewelry, the gem shows have been a mainstay in the area serving Freeport, Merrick, and Baldwin for more than two decades. Many of the exhibitors are also jewelry designers, providing the public with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the materials and their work.
The show’s history in Freeport pre-dates the make-your-own jewelry and beading trends of recent years. For hobbyists who have taken up jewelry crafting, the show provides a wider range of supplies than are offered at the local craft store or by a jewelry supply website. However, the continuing popularity of such an event also testifies to the enduring appeal of artisan-crafted work.
Kaleidoscope Gem Shows has been doing the banner printing and table arranging as the show producer throughout its history. Its consistent theme has been “products produced by Mother Earth”. The company works to keep the show fresh, soliciting applications for new exhibitors on an ongoing basis. Dealers of gems, fossils, minerals, beads, gold, silver, and finished jewelry, as well as goldsmiths, silversmiths, and wire wrappers, are all encouraged to apply. Please note that vendors must have a New York State Sales Tax Certificate.
This year’s final show will be held on October 27 – 28 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm on each day. Looking ahead, the show is booked for another three appearances in Freeport in 2013, in April, August, and October. Show admission is $5.50 for adults and free for accompanied children aged 12 and under.
