Savings bank launches school tools drive

During the month of August, Astoria Federal Savings Bank, with locations in Massapequa and Massapequa Park, will be holding its 14th annual Kids Tools for School collection drive. No doubt the bank is using banner printing throughout the community to encourage people to donate new school supplies, or money for the purchase of them.

The Kids Tools for School collection drive is designed to help families that have problems affording the school supplies they need for their children. The bank will match up to $10,000 in cash donations so that additional school supplies can be purchased and distributed to school children who need them in the local area.

School supplies for each year can cost up to $100 per child, and some families are finding that their financial situations make them unable to provide the school supplies their children need for the year. So that children can arrive at school in September with the requisite supplies, the bank is working with local schools, human service organizations, and shelters to distribute the supplies they collect to those families most in need.

According to Briand Edwards, Astoria Federal Savings Executive Vice President, the bank knows that those children who start school in September without the supplies they need can be at both academic and social disadvantages. He says that the bank has always received a great deal of support from individuals, businesses and civic organizations, and it has been a rewarding experience to know that children can be helped to start school with new supplies and a fresh outlook for the upcoming school year.
