Hicks Nurseries to be Sunday’s tomato source

August 23, 2012 by

This coming Sunday, August 26, Hicks Nurseries, the oldest nursery and garden center on Long Island, will be holding its 15th Annual Tomato Contest.

The nursery was founded in 1853 and sells a variety of plant products, as well as garden accents and furniture. The nursery teaches horticulture and gardening classes and hosts events year round. The Tomato Contest has become a staple event for the end of the summer.

Entrants will be accepted at 10:00 am on the day of the competition and the awards will be handed out at 11:00 am. There will be prizes for the heaviest tomato, the tomato with the largest circumference, the most unusual tomato, and the tiniest tomato. Each tomato can only win in one category and any tomato entered in the competition must also be ripe and not have been frozen at any point.

Children under the age of 12 are also encouraged to share their ‘Own-Grown’ tomatoes with the nursery. All participants will receive a Hicks Nursery Certificate of Achievement.

Hicks Nurseries is located in Westbury, New York, a short drive from Manhasset. Admission to the event is free, so those with an interest in gardening should not hesitate to stop by.

Printing companies will probably be working to create flyers to promote this event. They may also be called on to create informational brochures so that the nursery can share some of its advice on tomato growing with those who attend. These companies may even be required to print out the certificates that are given out as awards.
