Solstice celebration in Socrates Sculpture Park
June 17, 2012 by Sarah
On Wednesday, June 20, the summer of 2012 will officially begin and the Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City will be hosting a celebration for the longest day of the year.
Beginning at 5:00 pm, guests are welcome to peruse art-making workshops presented by Free Style Arts Association, IOBY, Materials for the Arts, The Noguchi Museum, and Queens Museum of Art. Agostino Arts will also be on hand offering some fun face painting.
For those who really want to get into the solstice celebration, Urban Shaman Mama Donna will be holding a special solstice ritual. Natalie Jeremijenko will be hosting a workout session with her X Fitness Hula Hoops. Those who participate in the exercise will be scattering seeds throughout the park with the hoops as they use them. This is part of an ongoing project hosted by Jeremijenko and other artists called Civic Action.
Silent Storm Sound System will be performing a silent disco concert as well. Those who wish to listen can obtain wireless headphones, allowing them to listen to the high energy music without having to distract other guests.
Finally, for those who just want to relax, Rirkrit Tiravanija’s outdoor installation holds a number of restaurants serving a variety of goods. Guests are welcome to eat there or lay out some picnic blankets to see a great view of the Manhattan skyline.
Printing companies will be hard at work creating flyers to promote the event and for the various artists in attendance to promote themselves to any guests who are interested in seeing more of their work.
