Pelham Art Center to ring in Chinese New Year

February 6, 2013 by

This coming weekend, the Pelham Art Center will be hosting demonstrations and workshops about the upcoming Chinese New Year as part of its folk art series.

Guests will be able to see members of Kwan’s Kung Fu Studio of Peekskill perform the traditional “Lion Dance”. There will also be workshops on making snake puppets, to celebrate the Year of the Snake, and paper lanterns.

The Pelham Art Center is located in Pelham, New York in Westchester County, just north of the Bronx. It offers free and affordable art programs and exhibits meant to engage the community. The organization believes that art strengthens communities and culture, and that accessible art leads to people being more engaged with art in their lives. The Pelham Art Center also tries to create Outreach Programs designed to bring the experience of art to people who might otherwise be unable to easily see it.

The event runs this Saturday, February 9, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, and the “Lion Dance” begins at 2:30. Admission is free and guests are encouraged to wear red clothing for good luck. Chinese New Year itself begins on Sunday.

Print companies might be called on to create flyers to promote this event in areas near Pelham as well as places within New York City. Though it is not in the same borough, residents of Long Island City and other neighborhoods in New York may want to take the time to travel up to the north Bronx to get a dance, witness these demonstrations, and participate in the workshops.
