5K weekend event gets off and running
August 17, 2012 by James
The Syracuse Chargers Track Club will be hosting the Willow Bay 5K Run and Witness Walk for Women tomorrow, August 18. The course is on the route next to Onondaga Lake, and it is a US Track & Frield (USATF) certified 5K course. Water is provided for the runners at the turnaround and there will be no traffic allowed in the area during the race.
Special awards will be given to the runners with the best time in age brackets of 10-14, 15-19, 20-24 and for five year age groups beyond that. There will also be prizes for the best combined times in the team categories of mother and daughter, grandmother and granddaughter, aunt and niece, and sisters. Runners can also participate in the Double Your Fun Challenge, where runners win a prize if their finishing team is less than half of their age.
There is a $25 fee for registering on the day of the event, though women who are 65 or older may enter for free. Registration will open at 7:30 am and the race is set to begin at 9:00 am. The first 225 entrants will receive a T-shirt and door prizes will be handed out to participants after the race.
The event is a great way to promote fitness for women and there is little doubt that printing companies will be called on to create promotional materials for the race to draw in runners from nearby areas like Liverpool, New York. They may also be called on to create informational brochures about future events held by the Chargers Track Club.
