The Calvary Episcopal Church and Temple Beth Am will be co-hosting the fifth annual “Walk Off Hunger” event on Saturday, July 28, in Island Park, New York.
The walk is one of ten which are part of the second annual BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York Healthy Walking Challenge. It will begin at 6:00 pm and is followed by a series of celebratory activities. There will be music, food, and drink as well as a kid’s play area with games and educational activities. There will also be a basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle.
Marylou Borowiak, president and CEO of the Food Bank, spoke of the value of the event:
“Proceeds from the first four years of Walk Off Hunger have provided more than 850,000 meals for those in need.”
Gary Bluestein, chairman and founder of the walk, also emphasized that people supporting and participating in the walk are helping the local community. Bluestein commented:
“They are helping their neighbors and their children’s classmates. And they are doing it while enjoying a great event. Helping others and having fun in the process.”
As an added incentive to draw in more participants, this year’s walk features a school competition. Whichever school manages to register the most walkers by June 1 will receive a free ice cream party courtesy of Perry’s Ice Cream.
Printing companies will be creating pamphlets and flyers to promote this event. They will also likely be creating informational brochures to promote awareness of the cause and to draw in more donations.
