Rhinebeck prepares for Spring Awakening

March 1, 2013 by

Beginning today, The Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck will be presenting Up in One Production’s version of the acclaimed musical ‘Spring Awakening’. The show is being produced by Diana di Grandi, and it is being directed and choreographed by Kevin Archambault.

The story is set in the late-19th Century in Germany and is about teenagers coming of age and discovering themselves within a repressive society. It was conceived by Frank Wedekin in 1891 but was banned in Germany at the time due to its content.

The original Broadway production debuted in 2006 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction, and Best Score. The cast included actors John Gallagher Jr., Jonathan Goff, and Lea Michele of Glee fame. The soundtrack performed by the original cast also won a Grammy Award. The lyrics and book for the show were written by Steven Sater, while the music, famous for its pop-rock style, was written by Duncan Shiek.

Friday and Saturday performances of the show will start at 8:00 pm. The Sunday shows will be matinees that begin at 3:00 pm. Tickets cost $26 for general admission and $24 for seniors. Due to the show’s content, it is recommended that children under the age of 14 do not attend.

The Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck may turn to print companies to create flyers for the show to try and draw in audience members from other areas of Dutchess County, like Poughkeepsie or Hyde Park. They may also require the service of print companies to create programs for those who attend the show.

The performances will be running on weekends until March 17.
